If you are completely new to homeopathy, or if even if you know something about homeopathy, but haven't read it, a great place to start is with The Science of Homeopathy, by George Vithoulkas. This is an excellent, very readable introduction to the principles of homeopathy by a contemporary master. We often recommend this to veterinarians who are thinking of or planning to take our professional course. Regardless of what modality of medicine you use, it provides an insightful understanding of the process of disease and healing.

Another well-written, more personal introduction to homeopathy that we especially like is Dr. Timothy Dooley's Homeopathy: Beyond Flat Earth Medicine. This is a shorter book and an easy introduction to the principles of homeopathic treatment.

For specific use of homeopathy in animals, we consider Dr. Don Hamilton's Homeopathic Care for Cats and Dogs: Small Doses for Small Animals to be the best and most contemporary overview on the use of homeopathy in small animals. Dr. Hamilton, who has taught in the Professional Course in Veterinary Homeopathy, provides detailed explanations about the use of homeopathy in companion animals and presents many examples.

If there is a "bible" of homeopathy it would have to be the final work of the founder of homeopathy, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann, a German physician: Organon of the Medical Art. We especially like Wenda O'Reilly's recent translation with annotations. This is a work of genius and a must-read for the serious student of homeopathy. Not an easy read, but essential to understand in order to practice homeopathy really well.

Kent's Lectures on Materia Medica is an excellent description of the action of the homeopathic medicines. A materia medica is a comprehensive description of the uses of each homeopathic remedy, describing the kinds of symptoms and conditions it is capable of treating. There are many materia medicas in print, but this is one of the most useful. It was written about 100 years ago, so the language will seem archaic but the clinical information is still accurate.

Another classic guide to understanding the way that homeopathy works, which is vital for knowing how to prescribe accurately and understanding how to interpret the results of your prescriptions, is Dr. James T. Kent's Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy. This is a deeper explanation of the perspective underlying homeopathic work. Suitable for the serious student. Not an easy read at first, but pure gold.

Crossroads to Cure, is a wonderful book for the advanced practitioner who has progressed in a case to the point of determining the second prescription. This term, "second prescription" has a particular meaning in homeopathy. In a complex advanced case it is not unusual that after the first remedy has acted well that a second, different, remedy is needed. To find this next remedy is a challenge. This book addresses the clinical situation and is a guide to understanding the problem and how to meet it.

One of the treasures in homeopathic literature is Erastus Case's Some Clinical Experiences. It is a complilation of cured cases, ranging from severe pathological conditions to behavior disorders. It is an old book in that it was first printed in 1916 so the names of disease conditions will be unfamiliar is some instances. However, it becomes apparent, on learning the meaning of these older terms, that we deal now with the same conditions which now have "new" names.

Nash's little book, Leaders in Homeopathic Therapeutics, is the fruit of a full life of experience as a homeopathic doctor. He writes marvelous descriptions of the remedies and their action in the clinical setting.
